On Instagram, what we see, say, and share is highly controlled by the platform. Anyone who steps out of line can suddenly disappear under strict surveillance or censorship. What if we taught each other an alternative language to discuss sensitive topics both online and offline? In the installation Algodance, artists Julie van Essen and Marit Hoefsloot are building a digital public space where you can freely convene and communicate, outside of Big Tech’s restrictive policies and content formats. Algodance offers an alternative communication method that can be used to discuss sensitive topics online and offline. Using the body as code and movement as a message, they aim to slide under the radar of Meta’s algorithm.
